"Seeker-Sensitivity Repents"
...By Taking More Polls?

This video cites the book Fool's Gold, compiled by John MacArthur. I have not personally read this book, but if you're interrested, here's a link!

In this video, something is revealed that I've been observing for years. When it comes to the "Seeker-Sensitive" movement, the spiritual seekers are very much comfortable and enjoy the environment. But the more a person progresses in their faith, the less satisfied they are with the whole methodology. This time, it's being admitted by one of the most influential names in the "seeker-sensitive" movement: Bill Hybels, pastor of Willow Creek.

So what are we to make of these statistics? I'm not one to play both sides of the fence, but I do think there are some things Bill Hybels and others have discovered that are true. For instance, one of the former staff members at Hybel's church, Steve Sjogren, has written extensively on Christian acts of kindness and their value in presenting Christ to those who don't know Him. Then there's all the discussion about "relational evangelism" in which people are encouraged to share Jesus through friendship and mercy rather than street-corner condemnation through a bullhorn. These are landmarks in the seeker-sensitive movement, but they are also practiced by Jesus Christ, so they shouldn't be overlooked.

Nevertheless, a problem arises when we try to build a church on these principles rather than on Jesus Christ Himself. If we base our methods on statistics, then we have made them our God. If we base our methods on the culture, then we have made the culture our God. But if we base our methods on the Holy Spirit, they will be statistically effective in reaching the people within the culture. What matters is that we build our relationship with God rather than our human comprehension of the world. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
