I've been a musician and worship leader for several years now, and I can only give the credit to God for any talent I have. The songs on this page are written, performed, and recorded by me and a handful of my friends. Holy Fire
This song has some intense lyrics dealing with casting away the evil, fleshly human nature and embracing true relationship with God through the Holy Spirit.

Music & Lyrics by Art Thomas
Performed by Art Thomas, Sara Vander Velde (vocals), and Katie Lawler (guitar and vocals).

Tearing Down Every Stronghold
This is "spiritual warfare" set to music! This song is based on several scriptures on warfare and victory in Christ, but more than anything it is meant to be an application of those verses.

Music & Lyrics by Art Thomas
Performed by Art Thomas, Sara Vander Velde (vocals), Jessica Cole (congas), Katie Lawler (guitar), and Rebecca Main (djembe).

Take Me Up
Based on Ephesians 2:6, which says we are now seated with Christ in the heavenly realms; and Revelation 3:21, which says that the overcomers are given the right to sit with Christ on His throne. This song reminds us of the authority Christ has freely given us as Christians.

Three Nails
Mostly piano and vocal, this song was written several years ago when I first started to grasp the depth of Christ's sacrifice.

A Supernatural Gift of Musical Talent

For most of my life, I had a hard time carrying a tune. I played trumpet in fifth grade band and had a "D" average (you have to play pretty bad to do poorly in fifth grade band!).

Anyhow, when I entered the seventh grade, I had seen no improvement on my trumpet playing; so I burried it in the back of my closet and decided to move on with life.

A year and a half later, we were having some special meetings at our church, and my mom somehow convinced me to play trumpet during the music times. Looking back, I don't know why I went through with it or why anybody else let me play that horn in public, but I did it! Then, naturally, all the little old ladies in the church did the little old lady thing and encouraged me to keep playing on a regular basis. And for whatever reason, I did that too.

A few months later, I was looking through the church attic for a trumpet stand to put my instrument on, and I came accross a custom-built stand that could hold four different instruments: trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, and flute. It had belonged to a gentleman named Dave who passed away five years prior; and since he didn't need it anymore, I figured I'd use it myself.

Now here's where the supernatural part comes in. That morning in Sunday School, we had heard the story of Elijah and Elisha from the Bible. Long story short, the prophet Elijah is about to be supernaturally taken into heaven without dying, and his apprentice, Elisha, begs him for a "double portion" of his anointing (which is a fancy word for the authority, position, and spiritual gifts that he had been given by the Holy Spirit). As it turns out, as Elijah is being swept into heaven in a whirlwind, he throws a piece of clothing called a "mantle" down to Elisha. Elisha picks it up, knowing it is a symbol of Elijah's anointing being passed on, and starts to head home. The truth of the baton-pass was then confirmed as Elisha smacked the river with the mantle, the waters parted, and he crossed on dry ground. The rest of his life and ministry confirmed his anointing as well--in fact he ended up performing twice as many miracles as his predicessor, Elijah.

With this story fresh in my mind, I looked at that instrument stand, and with childlike faith I prayed, "Well God, make this stand like a mantle, and I want double what Dave had."

Guess what? When I reached the stage in time to start the church service, my sheet music was gone (I still don't know why). But still believing, I picked up my trumpet and said, "Well God, here goes!"

I then played by ear like I never had before. In fact, since that event, I've learned to play more than twenty instruments--I learned guitar in a month, piano in a week, saxaphone in a couple hours, and flute in about 45 minutes; the list goes on. It's all a testimony of God's power over all things. I can't explain it or tell you why He responded so powerfully; I just know He did. And I've since met a handful of musicians who have had similar sudden divine endowments of musical talent.

God can do anything! It's time for us to stop relegating God's activity to the metaphysical and metaphorical realms and start recognizing His power and glory being revealed in the natural realm! What do you believe God can do in your life?

Blessings,
Art Thomas
