True Revival in China

Art's Comments:

Sometimes I wonder if we in America know what revival actually is. We watch a few months of people flocking to a common location to shake and feel goosebumps, and then it disappears as quickly as it came. People emphatically declare that the "revival" is still alive and well, but really they're just trying to keep alive a short move of God that was not meant to be an entire movement.

But then we look at the persecuted Church in countries like China, Iran, Sudan, North Korea, and so forth. We hear about small handfuls of Christians meeting behind thick curtains, or in caves, or cellars, or barns--hoping the government doesn't raid their meeting at any moment. Their churches are burned. Their homes are burned. Their families are terrorized. And they themselves are tortured and imprisoned all for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Nevertheless, in China alone, some 20,000-25,000 people come to Christ on a daily basis!

That's right! While we in America struggle to hold onto that one person who raised their hand at the end of last week's church service, the persecuted church in China is multiplying by leaps and bounds. As we argue with our family on the car-ride to church, the Chinese Christians sneak through the bushes under cover of night just to gather together in the name of Christ. And as we look for a more effective way to "see our miracle," they sing hymns in prison and worship the Lord while their captors beat them with electric batons.

Are we so selfish? The American "Gospel" tends to be very "me-centered" rather than "God-centered." We want prosperity, blessing, healing, favor, and miraculous signs. All the while, our persecuted brothers and sisters are demonstrating the Biblical principle of righteous suffering--laying down their comfort, conveniences, and ultimately their lives for the sake of Christ. These are true disciples of Christ who bear much fruit as they take up their own cross and follow Him. May we all learn from their example and repent of our pettiness.

The Heavenly Man - By Paul Hattaway

This remarkable true story of Chinese "Brother Yun" has had a profound impact on me and several close friends. Translated and penned by Paul Hattaway, it is written from the perspective of Yun, who has been imprisoned and tortured for his faith in Jesus Christ. But his life is not one of defeat--read about some of the countless miracles and supernatural experiences that have filled his life in the midst of such great persecution. Yun also contrasts the underground Chinese Church with the modern American Church and has some profound points to share. I highly recommend this book!
